GAME VIEWING, BIRDING Lake Mweru Wantipa is situated along the eastern border of this 3 134 km national park and from it the land rises gently westwards to a range of deeply incised hills. Dense papyrus beds dominate the vegetation along the lake shore, with a belt of mixed bushwillow and other tree species separating the miombo woodland of the interior from the shoreline. The area was once known for its large elephant and crocodile populations, but sadly poaching has greatly reduced their numbers. There is, however, a large population of bushbuck, and such species as buffalo, blue and yellow-backed duiker. Sharpe's grysbok, puku, reedbuck, roan, sable, sitatunga and hippopotamus also occur. Predators are represented by leopard and lion. The birdlife is particularly rich along the lake shore. Location: Far northern Zambia; north of Lusaka. Access: From Lusaka follow the main road north-eastwards to Mpika, then continue northwards to Kasama; at Kasama turn left and drive for 173 km to Mporokoso; continue westwards, taking the right turn towards Chiengi; and then another right turn towards Kaputa. This road runs through the Mweru Wantipa National Park. There is no internal road network. Accommodation: None. Other facilities: None. Open: The park is inaccessible during the rainy season. Beware: Malaria; bilharzia; tsetse fly. The presence of armed poachers could pose a threat to visitors; check with the authority.
